Kibabu in Retirement

100x150cm

Charcoal on paper

2016

A beautiful old lowland silverback, was well known all over the world as he had lived and travelled many places procreating and leaving behind a new generation of offspring to the world gorilla insurance policy. He was a great advocate for his cousins in the wild, inspiring and educating the next generation of wildlife lovers and advocates. The reference photo I used for this drawing, I took at Mogo Zoo, NSW Australia where Kibabu lived in his retirement until the day he died of old age in 2020. I love drawing large scale wildlife as I feel it’s the perfect subject for my dark, soft, flowing style of charcoal drawing. The two largest drawing I’ve ever completed, the main attraction of my first solo exhibition, were of the magnificent Kibabu.
