A New Beginning

60x74cm

Charcoal on paper

2022

From the very beginning I've been torn between two different meanings behind this piece. The first is a mother closely watching over her calf. The idea that, with this critically endangered species, every new calf born presents a new hope for the species. The second idea for this drawing was that it is a drawing of the one individual rhino. It's young and helpless self of the present in the foreground, and its strong, powerful, adult self coming up behind it in the future. This cute little creature only has to admire it's mother to learn of its potential.
