Patience

136x97cm

Charcoal on paper

2021

This charcoal drawing is rightfully titled ‘Patience’ as it required an extreme amount of it it for me too push through a drawing of this size and detail. I completed this drawing over the course of 2 years as I felt finishing it in one go, spending months on end on one drawing, would be too difficult to get through without giving up. I’ve never felt more proud of myself than when I finished this drawing. The other reason I felt ‘Patience’ was the right name for this artwork was the heart warming display of patience by the mother elephant when I took the reference photo. While at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, I watched his mother let her young claf climb all over her in the dirt for almost an hour. I feel very lucky to have been able witness such a beautiful display of motherhood by the elephant.
